Little known fact: Before he became one of the most revered filmmakers of all time, Stanley Kubrick, the late creator of such cinematic gems as Lolita, 2001: A Space Odyssey, and A Clockwork Orange, was a photographer—he became a shutterbug at the ripe old age of 13. Kubrick picked up his Graflex camera, and was quickly christened the Official School Photographer at the Bronx’s William Howard Taft High School back in the 1940s. Later, he became the youngest photographer to work with Look, a photo-centric general interest magazine.
Though he was an accomplished photographer, Kubrick’s still images took a backseat to his film career. But no more. Thanks to a collaboration between Museum of the City of New York and antiques and collectibles website VandM.com, 25 Kubrick-captured photographs are on sale now. Anyone who plans to come up with a better holiday gift idea, um, good luck with that.
