Mashup Master Expensive Looks Makes an Exclusive Playlist for Bullett

February 10th, 2012

Imagine you’re dreaming. It’s the early ‘90s, and you’re listening Hot 97. You hear the tracks, but somehow they’re distorted. The cadence of the beat is warped, stretching and syncopating the familiar sounds. Your favorite old songs are suddenly new again. Congratulations, you’ve just imagined Expensive Looks.

Expensive Looks, also known as Alec Feld, is a part of an ever expanding group of musicians who work exclusively with the pre-recorded tracks of a specific genre, remixing them and creating reconstructions that generate brand new listening experiences from music that our generation grew up with.  What separates Expensive Looks from predecessors like Girl Talk and Super Mash Bros. is his commitment to predominantly sample tracks from early ‘90s hip-hop and R&B, giving his tracks a very specific vibe and tone. In a mix done exclusively for Bullett, Expensive Looks stitched together classic tracks by Black Street, Aaliyah, Destiny’s Child, and TLC, played with their rhythms, and created a sound that took us back to middle school and made our inner-13 year old dance its ass off.
